You should always let your hair dry with its natural wave or add a soft wave with a curling iron or flat iron. Always be sure to you use a heat protectant when using hot tools on your hair. Our favorite for updos and curls is the KMS Hot Flex Spray, it has heat memory and a slight hold to help keep your curl from falling flat.
Also using a dry shampoo to absorb oils and add bulk to your hair will make it much more manageable and easy to work with. We love the Dry Clean Only by Sebastian. Teasing the hair will give any bobby pins you use a base to hold on to and prevent them from slipping. It will also add volume to your style. Try to work with your hair, not against it. Let it go where it wants to naturally. Trying to force your hair to do something could cause it to look awkward and feel uncomfortable. Add fun braids and twists to give your updo a more relaxed and unstructured look.
For short hair, a french braid can be the perfect way to keep shorter layers from falling loose and out of the style. Always make sure you work around accessories. It can be very hard to place a head band or hair clip in your style after its complete. And lastly have fun with it! It doesn't need to look perfect or symmetrical, just let it happen.
